Practical 10
We had started on our group assignment. The EIR wiki. Discuss topic is on the bullying on cyberspace. I find this topic interesting. I have never realized how bad cyberspace bullying had become before i come across articles and youtube videos relating about this topic. Some committed suicide because of being bullied in the cyberspace too. Cyber bullies are really childish and coward. They targeted those who are weaker than them and they don't even dare to show their faces out sometimes. I wondered how i will react when i am caught in such situation? Will i confront them back or ignore them? I really don't know. Anyway, EIR is coming to the end. And oh, is like finally. Don't misunderstand me as if i dislike this module. This cds certainly can be fun if it is not so rush. I really enjoyed myself in some discussions and i do learn from this cds. Like what i said before, i did not even know that meta search engine exist before i attend EIR. I have taken away knowledge on how to improve in my searching skills, ways to look for my information in a shortest and most effective way. I tried to use the forums in communicating and discussing with others who i do not know and also get to know how should i evaluate my resource though those criteria. These certainly will come in handy when i am doing research for my projects. Goodbye to EIR and to holiday, here i come. : ) ![]()

We had one short group discussion recently. We are to answer to a few questions related to youtube services. Every group is to present their discussion to the whole class.
What do i think of youtube? Basically it is just a channel for me to search for dramas or movies. Did I ever mention that I love to watch dramas and movies when i am free in my first post of blog? Anyway, i am not very active in using youtube. I will only follow the links which my friends send me over msn telling me how funny the video is. I believe youtube is one of the world's biggest videos sharing service. I can see videos embleded in friendster or blogs for other to watch. I am sure there are people who knows how to use youtube in a good way as compared to me, by searching more inspirational videos which is more to a educational purpose that enrich their life. I suppose i can consider using youtube as my research source too. Watching videos will be so much better than reading the texts for researching. ![]()

Practical 8 and 9
I am suppose to start on evaluation of internet resource for my part 2 of the portfolio a few days ago but i have just complete the part 1 of the portfolio after i changed my discuss topic. But anyway, i have found 1 website which i wanted to evaluate. By understanding what evaluation of internet resource is about, i believe i will not have much difficulties on working on the part 2 of the portfolio. There are 9 criteria to follow when evaluating the internet resource. We will have to look into the purpose, coverage, authority, accuracy, currency, accessibility, presentation & arrangement, usability and overall. Anyway, we are suppose to find a multimedia website for our dream holiday. I suppose some heard of the five stars tour? They provide tour packages to the country i wanted to go which is Taiwan! The evaluation criteria i used to evaluate the website is authority, presentation and arrangement. I will of course have to know whether is this website reliable and have a certain reputation. Since the website is about tours, presentation and arrangement of photos will have to clear and attractive to catch the audience attention. Information given on that country and the activities planned will have to present in a understandable way for the users too. When the audience gets the juice of it, they will think of going down to ask for further details and information about their tour to a certain country. Anyway, why i want to choose to go to Taiwan? Perhaps is due to the influence of watching too much Taiwan idol dramas? I have always wanted to try the hot spring which i only see it on tv shows. My brother went to Taiwan before and he really enjoyed himself. I believe it will be a great trip if its not a dream holiday. ![]()
Kind of neglected my eir blog as i am rushing projects for my caid 2 module. Anyway, i am back to blog on my reflections on the practicals i did in class. I have completed my class tests 1 and 2. Scored rather badly for my class test 2. However, i am not going to brood over it but to work hard working on my portfolio.
I changed my discuss topic to the effects on social networking. Changing topic means i will have to start everything from scratch and it means i have to research for everything again. But as compared to the previous topic which is the developments on internet social networking services, researching on the effects on social networking is much more interesting. Anyway, i believe everyone have at least 1 of the social networking services or perhaps heard of one before. For example, facebook is getting more and more popular too. People who have these services usually check their friendster and facebook or log in to msn first when they switch on their computer. They will look forward for any friends requests, new messages or comments and talking to someone. Thus, these social networking services do have their effect on people behavior. ![]()

Practical 7 Lesson was interesting. The class visited 'talking cock' website. A very 'cool' website indeed. Basically the whole class was separate into 3 big groups and each group had their own roles to play. I am in the group which represents the Singaporean while the other 2 groups represent the Singapore prime minister and foreign talent. So, by standing in the perspective of each role, each group have to present their views upon viewing this website. As a Singaporean, i think is website is a corner for Singaporeans to complain and point out their disagreement to certain decision taken by the government or on the current issue. Some articles are really humorous which makes the reader laughs. What really comes to my mind when i first visited this website is what is the purpose of this website? And this is the criteria i am looking into. This website is sure an entertaining and perhaps with some information source. It is entertaining in a way that they provide funny articles and also jokes. But why information? They used current issues to create jokes so in the same time, they gives information and entertain the reader. Anyway, participating in the role play can be fun when there is a debating session. This is when the 'bombing' starts. However, the overall lesson was good. ![]()

The last search facilities is the invisible web ( datebases ) which is referred as deep web. It consists of highly authoritative information and is a collection of information stored in the form of data. They are reliable and more up-to-date information. Most of them require us to pay to access them. Some examples of these invisible webs are: -Acadamic gateway -Complete planet Temasek polytechnic has its own digital portal library as they purchased those aricles which allows the stuffs or students from TP to access to them and are they are not searcheable through internet search engines. For examples are TP's E-books database ITPRO and also TP's Digital Library Portal Research Gateway. However, i don't feel that these invisible webs can be more effective than search engines. True enough that thses webs can provide reliable and recent articles. But the effectiveness really have to depend on what are the topics i am looking for. By learning more about these search facilities, i can apply them to help me get information easier and faster in future. This certainly benefit me in researching greatly, saving up the trouble of viewing pages of irrelevant information and avoid being lost in the sea of resources. ![]()
A public holiday-Deepavali on Monday.
We are not spared from having EIR lesson. Not exactly having lesson in school though but we are to do our e-learning: forum discussion- Posting my thoughts on a certain topic and receiving comments from classmates. This e-learning involves communicating on the internet, something related to my research topic. Perhaps in the future, schools are not needed as parents can enroll their children to 'online schools', lessons are taught using web cam and assignments are emailed to the students. Enough of my imagination of 'online schools'. I came across an article which says employers are starting to look at social networking sites which help them research on possible job candidates. So, beware of what you post on your social networking sites. I wonder do lecturers search for our sites for example facebook? Here's the link for the article: Click here! |
